An Attempt to Establish National Dose Reference Levels for Head CT - Scan Examinations in Indonesia : Preliminary Results from Malang Hospitals
نویسنده
چکیده
CT-scanners are becoming more and more popular imaging modality amongst medical practitioners as their tools for diagnostic practices. Yet, since CT-scanners employ ionizing x-ray beam as the source of imaging light, protection against its damaging effects must be observed closely to ensure that the harmful effects to patients are minimum. Our study involved three Departments of Radiology in three major hospitals in the city of Malang, East Java, Indonesia. We took at least 100 (50 males and 50 females) patients who were sent to the department CT facility to have non-contrast head CT examination in each hospital. The effective dose of each patient was calculated using the CTDosimetry version 1.0.4 dose calculator software. Our results reveal that the effective doses received by patients were in range 1.25 – 2.51 mSv for male patients and 1.14 – 2.39 mSv for female patients. In general, male patients received more doses than the female counterparts as predicted. Index Term— CT-scanner, ionizing x-ray beam, radiodiagnostic, medical imaging

Assessment and evaluation of patient doses in adult common CT examinations towards establishing national diagnostic reference levels
Background: Patient radiation doses from computed tomography (CT) are increasing due to the number of CT examinations performed every day. The aim of this study was assess and evaluate patient radiation doses for adult’s common CT examinations to derive local diagnostic guidance levels for common CT examinations. Materials and Methods: Volume and weighted computed tomography dose index (C...
متن کاملEstablishment of Diagnostic Reference Levels and Estimation of Effective Dose from Computed Tomography Head Scans at a Tertiary Hospital in South Africa
Introduction: Head scans are the most frequently performed computed tomography (CT) examinations worldwide. However, there is growing concern over the probability of increased cancer risks among the exposed populations. Diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) identify radiation dose that is not commensurate with clinical objectives. The aim of this study was to establish DR...
متن کاملDiagnostic Reference Levels for Computed Tomography Examinations in Iran: A Nationwide Radiation Dose Survey
Introduction: International Commission on Radiological Protection introduced three basic principles of radiation protection, namely justification, optimization, and dose limit. Medical exposure has no dose limits, and generally, diagnostic reference levels are used as a tool for optimization of patient protection. Material and Methods: Dosimetry was performed on 20 CT scanners located in 14 cit...

Background: Today, a CT scan examination play an important role in disease diagnosis and thus allocates a significant dose of medical X-ray examinations. One of the important principles in the use of ionizing radiations is to observe radiation protection principles. Evaluating patient's absorbed dose and implementing the strategies for reducing dose are prior in safety issues. To achieve this p...
